Four second graders in an elementary school in southern Taiwan were recruited as the participants and were given English nursery rhymes instruction for eight weeks, 40 minutes each week. This study involved a mixed-methods approach. Classroom observations, interview data, and teaching reflection were transcribed and qualitatively analyzed. In addition, to compare the pretest and posttest for the motivation questionnaire and the phonological awareness test, paired-samples T-test methods were used for collation, analysis and induction as a supplement to the research results. The conclusions of the study are summarized as follows:1. The English nursery rhymes instruction had a positive effect on developing the phonological awareness of elementary school second graders.2. There were significant differences in the learning motivation among the students before and after the English nursery rhymes instruction, particularly in regard to extrinsic motivation.3.
